Salads Don’t Have to Be Boring!
Hello Everyone!
What do you think of when you hear the word “salad”? Maybe lettuce with some various vegetables, toppings, and dressing come to mind. Perhaps iceberg lettuce and chopped carrots on the side accompanied by a delicious protein and sides is what pops into your head. Often times the word “healthy” comes to mind when thinking of salad. When a person considers improving their eating habits, they may attempt to incorporate more salad into their diets.
I have lost count of how many people I have heard discuss how discouraged or unhappy they are with their eating regimen when attempting to implement more salads into their meals. They often noted that salads are not satisfying, tasteless, or boring. After having these discussions, a commonality I found is that some people have a limited definition or idea of what a salad is.
The wonderful thing about salads is that they afford you the opportunity to bring out your creativity in the kitchen! Just think of all of the various lettuces/greens, fruits, vegetables, dressings, and other ingredients you can use! There are also yummy salads that are bean, pasta, potato, or grain based, just to name a few. Salads can serve as both a side dish or a well balanced main dish that contains all of the food groups.
Salads allow you to explore many different flavor profiles and textures. There are lettuces/greens, grains, and beans that contain mild, bitter, earthy, and/or sweet flavors. The ingredients that accompany the base of the salad also contain various flavors and textures. Your toppings of choice, such as croutons, nuts, seeds, or dried fruit build upon the flavors and textures. Lastly, the dressing’s flavor brings the salad together into a cohesive dish.

This was a really cool post. It’s got me thinking. I love cooking and sometimes it’s a challenge to think of creative sides. This post gave some ideas. Thanks!
Your post on salads is eye opening. I was one of the people who thought a salad had to be lettuce, croutons etc. I do enjoy Kale, so I’m excited to try using it as a base for salads.
I love salads, but now I’ll love them even more after reading your post.
