Hass Avocados
Hey Everyone!
What do you think of when you see avocados? Maybe you think about chips and guacamole from your favorite restaurant. Perhaps you think of avocado slices on your favorite taco or sandwich. Avocados are a very versatile and nutritious fruit that is consumed in a multitude of ways! Although there are many varieties of avocados, I will discuss the most common avocado: the Hass avocado.
The Hass avocado is the typical avocado you see at the grocery store characterized by its black bumpy skin with green flesh and a large pit. The Hass avocado was first grown by Californian postman Rudolph Hass in 1925. While his intention was to grow other varieties of avocado, unknown cross pollination created the Hass avocado. The Hass avocado was deemed valuable due to its thin skin, buttery flesh, and that they can be grown year round.
The average avocado is 250 calories and a nutritional powerhouse. Avocado contains 18g unsaturated fat, 760mg potassium, 45mg magnesium, 13mg Vitamin C, 20mg calcium, 135 mcg folate, and 10g of fiber among other nutrients. The avocado is also consumed in a plethora of ways, such as in salads, in soups, as a mayonnaise alternative on sandwiches, as a spread on toast, and as ice cream. What are some of your favorite ways to consume avocado?
I eat Avocados in my salads and slice them thin and put on a sandwich with turkey, tomatoes, onion, and lettuce. They are really good.
